Unstructured play enables children to engage in their games. Also called child-directed play, it is an open-ended activity that gives them the ability to explore their interests while providing independence to take risks and solve problems on their own. As early childhood education providers, we encourage play as it is beneficial to children’s development.
As a provider of infant care in Texas, we will discuss how children benefit from the unstructured play:
- Build Resilience
Unstructured play teaches children that things won’t always go according to plan. This provides the opportunity to explore and experience this feeling in a safe environment. Doing so promotes perseverance and problem-solving while developing their resilience.
- Develop Motor Function
Similar to a daycare field trip, engaging in child-directed play is an excellent way for children to use their energy. When playing, children develop their motor skills through walking, bouncing a ball, or holding a pen. This gives them the freedom to develop these skills and understand the movements associated with them.
- Promote Emotional Development
Child-directed play provides challenges where children can push themselves and learn how to control their motor functions. These activities help relieve emotional pressure and develop their self-confidence. This improves their emotional state by allowing them to self-regulate their responses and emotions.
- Learn Teamwork
Unstructured play encourages teamwork as your child learns how to negotiate and make compromises. This also includes learning how to get along with others and resolve the conflict between their peers.
